It is said that pasta makes one happy on a deeper level because of its high carbohydrate content. But honestly, who wouldn’t be happy with the sheer number of pasta varieties available? According to the International Pasta Organization, there are over 600 shapes of pasta globally. Let’s dive into the fascinating world of pasta and explore its varieties, history, nutritional benefits, and preparation methods

 A Brief History of Pasta

Pasta has so much drip (literally). Although it originated from China, it became the national and biggest meal in Italy and made its way around the world. Pasta even has its own day:

October 25 is World Pasta Day! This versatile dish has evolved over centuries, adapting to various cultures and cuisines.

 Nutritional Benefits of Pasta

Pasta contributes six of the eight essential amino acids to the diet. It is primarily produced by mixing water and flour, along with other ingredients such as eggs and olive oil. This simple composition makes it a great source of energy and essential nutrients.

Across the globe, some common pasta shapes include:

  •  Gomiti: Elbowshaped pasta, perfect for mac and cheese.
  •  Fusilli: Spiralshaped pasta that holds onto sauces well.

  • Penne: Tubeshaped pasta, great for baked dishes.

 Toasted Pasta with Pepper Sauce & Meatballs Recipe

 Ingredients:

 Pasta: 250 grams (spaghetti or penne works well)

 Ground beef: 500 grams

 Breadcrumbs: 1/2 cup/corn starch (also an option)

 Egg: 2

 Garlic: 2 cloves (minced)

Crushed Ginger

 Onion: 1 small (finely chopped)

 Parsley: 2 tablespoons (chopped)

Spring Onions for garnishing meat balls

Red & Green Peppers small sizes

Oregano

 Salt: to taste

 Black pepper: to taste

Vegetable oil: 3 tablespoons

For the Pepper Sauce:

Tatashe: 5 large sizes (take out the seed and veins)

Fresh Tomatoes: 3 large sizes

Onion: 1 large size

Scotch bonnet:6 large sizes

Tomato Paste: 1 tablespoonful

Meat Stock

Thyme

Salt

Bouillon Cubes (2)

 Method:

1. Prepare the Meatballs:

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, eggs, minced garlic, chopped onion, chopped parsley, salt, oregano, chopped green and red bell peppers and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly combined but don’t over work the meat.

Whisk the eggs (add salt)

Shape the meat into balls and put on a baking sheet. While shaping the meat into balls, oil your fingers to prevent the meat from sticking to your fingers

Place the baking sheet into the oven and bake in a 200o Celsius oven until nicely browned

Set aside and add to sauce later

2. Cook the Pasta:

 Spread pasta in baking sheet, then toss with vegetable oil. Place in oven (1490 celcius), toast pasta until it is brown. While the pasta is being toasted, bring water in a large pot to a boil. Add lots of salt. Once the pasta is brown put in the boiling salted water. Cook until al dante, drain and set aside.

3. Make the Pepper Sauce:

Blend tomatoes, peppers and onions. Heat vegetable oil in a pot or skillet, add some chopped onions and crushed garlic to the oil till fragrant and add tomato paste. Pour and stir the blended mix to fragrant oil and tomato paste. Allow to cook for 3 minutes and meat stock, bouillon cubes, salt and stir.

Cook the sauce till reduced, add your meat balls and allow to simmer for 5 minutes

Remove the meat balls

Turn the pasta into the sauce and stir until well combined.

Cover the pasta and allow to steam

Serve with meat balls garnished with spring onions.
